1 Executive summary

Bottom line: his best long-iron strike on record. 178 yds total, 169 carry, 114 mph ball speed, the fastest ball speed of any iron in his logbook, and only 9 ft of curve. Launch 18° and a 42° landing: a high, straight, soft 4-iron, right on the LPGA carry average (170).

The swing is athletic and well sequenced: ~0.53 s backswing, ~0.28 s downswing (~1.9:1), hips that keep their depth, a held finish. The familiar pattern is here too: the head drops ~7 in by the time the lead arm is parallel and is still ~7 in down at impact. With this much speed, removing that dip is the next step to a lower, longer 4-iron.

Personal best

114 mph, 9 ft curve

Fastest iron ball speed and straightest 4-iron in the logbook; carry +2 yds over report #1.

Priority 1

Quiet takeaway

The cap drops in the first 0.3 s. Keep it on its line until the lead arm is parallel.

Priority 2

Lower launch

Hands ahead at impact: 18° down to ~14–15° for a penetrating long iron.

★ 4-iron personal bests (114 mph is also his fastest ball speed with any iron). Club speed isn't on the screen: at a long-iron smash of ~1.36–1.40, 114 mph means about 81–84 mph. Curve direction read from the brighter arrow (right). LPGA/PGA: classic TrackMan Tour averages (4-iron).

What it means: speed and carry are LPGA level. Versus report #1 the ball launched 2° lower, landed 5° steeper and rolled less (9 yds vs 16), so it stops faster. Bringing launch to ~15° with the same speed should add a few yards of carry and a more penetrating flight in wind.

3 Timing & tempo — measured from the video

30 frames per second, so each time is accurate to about ±0.03 s. Takeaway starts at ~48.53 s, the club reaches the top at ~49.07 s, and impact is at ~49.35 s.

GroupBackswingDownswingRatio
André (4-iron #2, Oct 14)~0.53 s~0.28 s~1.9:1
André (4-iron #1, Oct 7)~0.50 s~0.27 s~1.9:1
André (7-iron, same day)~0.47 s~0.23 s~2:1
PGA Tour (Tour Tempo, "24/8")~0.80 s~0.27 s3:1

Tour figure: John Novosel, Tour Tempo. Frames: takeaway 47, top 63, impact 71–72.

What it means: identical rhythm to his first 4-iron, very repeatable. The downswing is already tour speed; a slower, fuller backswing (~0.65–0.8 s) is the free gain.

4 The reference frame — how this swing was measured

Reference frame
  • Grid: each square is about 5 inches (~7 px per inch at the golfer), scaled from his hip-to-ankle length, so treat distances as ±1–2 inches.
  • Vertical center line (light green): the head's address position. Horizontal lines: cap height (white) and hip height (light green) at address. The white box is the head at address.
  • Two corner diagonals (green): a fixed perspective scaffold for depth.
  • Paths: the red trail is the head and the yellow trail is the hands, frame by frame from address to impact. The red circle is the ball's address spot (already gone in this frame).
  • Body points were tracked automatically on every frame (210 frames, 47–54 s), head height was measured from the top of the cap, then checked by eye at each key position. The camera is fixed.

5 Swing sequence

Nine key positions, filmed from behind at an angle (down-the-line side). The target is into the picture. Times are from takeaway.

6 Position-by-position biomechanics

Club: 4-Iron, read on the sole in the video. Logged as report #2.

Photo 1 — Address Good

  • Athletic posture, weight centered, ball forward of center for a 4-iron.
  • Alignment station on the mat: a stick along the toe line, one for ball position, plus a target stick.
  • Very still over the ball: the cap barely moves in the 1.5 s before takeaway.

Photo 2 — Takeaway Watch

  • Connected start: hands, arms and chest together.
  • The cap is already ~3 in lower after just 0.1 s: the dip begins with the first move.

Photo 3 — Lead arm parallel Watch

  • Lead arm parallel at ~0.30 s, wide and on plane.
  • The cap is ~7 in below its address line here, and the head has moved ~5 in toward the ball.

Photo 4 — Top Good

  • Full turn, club near parallel at the top (~0.53 s backswing).
  • The head rises back to ~4 in below address; hips ~2½ in back from the ball, keeping their depth.

Photo 5 — Arm parallel (down) Good

  • Hands drop in front of the chest with the lower body leading.
  • The head begins to sink again into the strike.

Photo 6 — Impact Head down

  • Clubhead at the ball at ~49.35 s; one frame later the ball is gone.
  • The cap is ~7 in lower than at address and ~3½ in toward the ball.
  • Hips ~2 in back from their address depth: no early extension.
  • Hands back to their address spot.

Photo 7 — Ball launched Excellent

  • The ball has left within 1/30 s: a very solid strike (114 mph ball speed, his fastest with any iron).

Photo 8 — Release Good

  • Arms extend toward the target, chest rotating through.
  • The head starts rising once the ball is gone.

Photo 9 — Finish Excellent

  • Full, balanced finish facing the target, trail toe up, held while he watches the ball.

7 Same day, three irons (October 14)

4-Iron #2169 yds178 yds114 mph18°
6-Iron #3146 yds150 yds107 mph20°
7-Iron #1144 yds147 yds104 mph22°

A healthy ~23-yd step from the 6-iron to the 4-iron (~11–12 yds per club). The 6- and 7-iron were only 2 yds apart that day, which is where the gapping work is.

8 Diagnosis

  1. Fast, early head dip (~7 in by lead arm parallel and at impact): the same pattern seen across all his irons; it keeps launch above the LPGA window.
  2. Hips hold depth: no early extension, ~2 in back at impact.
  3. Tempo ~1.9:1: identical to his first 4-iron.
  4. Contact: excellent, with his fastest iron ball speed and only 9 ft of curve.

9 Next steps — keep it simple

1

Quiet takeaway

First 2 ft of the backswing with the cap still: turn the chest, don't bow toward the ball. 10 slow takeaways, then full swings.

2

Hands ahead

Hands over the lead thigh at impact. Target: 14–16° launch with the same 114 mph.

3

Keep the station

The three-stick setup clearly works: keep it for long irons.

10 Limitations & next capture

Confidence: high on ball flight, club ID and tempo; moderate on head and hip distances.
